About the Study

Regions across Latin America currently experience some of the highest dementia prevalence rates globally, yet they have received limited inclusion in large-scale prevention studies until now. In this investigation, researchers recruited 1,065 adults aged 60 to 77 who presented with dementia risk factors along with early indications of cognitive performance below expected norms for their age group. The participants were divided into two distinct cohorts to compare outcomes over a two-year period spanning 11 countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay.

The Structured Group Pulled Ahead on Cognitive Scores

One cohort participated in a carefully supervised multidomain intervention addressing exercise routines, nutritional guidance, cognitive skill development, and regular cardiovascular health assessments. The second cohort received only broad, nonspecific recommendations about maintaining general wellness. Over the course of the trial, both groups demonstrated cognitive improvements, yet the structured intervention group exhibited notably greater gains that reached statistical significance, suggesting the differences were not attributable to random variation. Additionally, the structured program fostered higher participant retention, with approximately 15 percent dropping out compared to about 20 percent in the general advice group. Those who remained engaged throughout the structured program consistently achieved the most substantial cognitive enhancements.

Keeping the mind active incorporated targeted cognitive exercises, such as acquiring new abilities or engaging in mentally stimulating tasks that challenge memory and problem-solving capacities. Checking in on heart health emphasized ongoing monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar, given the established interconnections between cardiovascular function and neurological well-being. Finally, incorporating accountability mechanisms like structured programs, personal trackers, or supportive partners helped sustain adherence and amplified the overall benefits observed.
